The Longhairs claim superior tensile strength with their Hair Ties for Guys. This project put this claim to the test.

The Tinius Olsen Universal Testing Machine was used to test four conventional Goody Hair Ties with four Hair Ties For Guys from The Longhairs.

The cross-sectional area for each hair tie was calculated prior to testing.

Tensile Test for Goody Hair Ties: Setup

Hair ties loaded using S hooks inserted into jaws of machine

Pull rate: 3.000 in/min

Tensile Test for Goody Hair Ties: Rupture

Average force at rupture: 14.799 lbf

Average ultimate tensile strength: 1034 psi

Tensile Test for Hair Ties for Guys: Setup

Hair ties loaded using S hooks inserted into jaws of machine

Pull rate: 3.000 in/min

Tensile Test for Goody Hair Ties: Rupture

Average force at rupture: 93.108 lbf

Average ultimate tensile strength: 4761 psi

Conclusions:

  • The Hair Ties For Guys were 4.6 times stronger than the Goody Hair Ties

  • Tensile test by El Moreno was valid
